Ursula Rucker
Listening to the Jazzanova song Circe, I have been amazed by the music, but appalled by the lyrics sung by Ursula Rucker. Appalled in the sense that I thought they were just bizarre, bad, and had enough strange sexual overtones to make me feel uncomfortable showing it to other folks. But her voice and poetry reading ability is superb, and the mix on Circe is incredible. It is one of the first nu-jazz/chill out/jazz house (pick your classification) songs I have heard that uses an upright bass. I also enjoy the numerous percussion instruments.
After reading more about who she is though, I realize that she is a famous, critically acclaimed poet and spoken word artist. And after accepting the idea of poetry set to music, I am starting to do dig her work.
